Masonic Ritual & Symbolism

Masonic ritual is a symbolic method of reflection and instruction.

It uses words, symbols, movement, silence, and shared experience to communicate moral and philosophical lessons. It is not entertainment, theater, or empty ceremony. At its best, Masonic ritual creates a serious and contemplative space where members are invited to reflect on their conduct, their responsibilities, their relationships with others, and the work of becoming better human beings.

Some aspects of Masonic ritual are reserved for members, not to create fear or mystery, but because certain experiences are best approached with preparation, trust, and sincerity.

The tools, architecture, light, journeys, and moral images of Freemasonry become mirrors through which members examine themselves and their relationship to the world. In this way, symbolism allows each person to approach the work with freedom of conscience while still sharing a common language with the lodge.

Craft Freemasonry is traditionally organized around three symbolic degrees. These are not social ranks or titles of superiority. They are progressive stages of reflection, instruction, and personal development.
